With temperatures finally starting to dip below 100 degrees in the Valley, chances are you may be venturing outside more often. As you do so, you may need to take stock of how the summer treated your outdoor furniture.
Outdoor furniture is built to take a beating from the elements but even the hardiest fabrics can collect dust, dirt and grime which breaks down the fabric and fades the color of your cushions, umbrellas and canopies. The best way to make these items last is to clean them regularly.
Before you begin cleaning, you should inspect your outdoor furniture cushions for any tags with cleaning instructions. You can always trust the manufacturer to give the best advice for keeping the item looking like new. If there’s no tag in sight, there are a few tricks that can apply to just about any outdoor furniture.
Borax, dish soap and water
Mix a teaspoon of Borax and a teaspoon of dish soap with a quart of water. Spray the mixture onto the fabric and allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes, careful not to let it dry out during that time. At the end of the 15 minutes, rinse the solution off with water and allow it to dry in the sun. This mixture works for general cleaning but may also be a powerful tool for getting rid of common outdoor stains, like bird poop or mildew.
