This month we celebrate the adoption of the flag representing the United States with horizontal stripes and white stars, representing a new constellation. The flag has changed significantly since its first introduction in 1777 but the honor it holds still remains strong.
If you’re a proud flag owner there are a few things you should know about properly caring for it.
Bring it inside
Regularly bringing your flag inside to inspect it and wash it will help prolong its life and beauty.
Any fabric will begin to lose some color if left in the elements for too long. Be sure to bring your flag in especially during stormy conditions like rain and hail. Strong winds can also weaken the fibers and cause tears so make sure and store your flag carefully during these conditions.
If your flag begins to wear but holds sentimental value, consider preserving it in a display case indoors.
Determine the fabric
Different fabrics require different care. When you purchase a flag, take note of the type of fabric it is made out of.
Nylon, polyester or synthetic materials can be washed in a washing machine or hand washed. Be sure to use cold water to keep the colors from bleeding.
Natural fibers like wool or cotton should be washed by hand with a fabric finish detergent that minimizes shrinkage. Allow your flag to soak in a mild detergent or oxygen bleach solution for several hours before rinsing with cold water. Oxygen bleach will prevent color bleeding.
If you’re unsure of the fabric, the biggest concern is color bleeding. You can test if the colors might bleed by dabbing each color with a wet cotton swab. If the color transfers to the swab you may not be able to wash it successfully.
Air Dry
Never put your flag in the dryer. No matter the fabric, a dryer can be tough on fabrics and may cause your flag to wear out sooner. Instead, use a clothes line or lay it flat to dry. Always allow the flag to dry completely before storing it.
You can use a cool iron for wrinkles in a nylon or polyester flag and a warm iron for natural fibers.
