Have you ever opened your washing machine after a cycle and felt like your clothes still smell bad? It may not be the dirt on your clothes, but the bacteria left behind in your washing machine.
Washing machines are constantly running through water and soap, but over time they get build up just like any other appliance. It’s a good idea to clean your washing machine regularly to keep your clothes smelling fresh after every wash.
Washing your washing machine doesn’t have to be complicated.
Start with about two cups of vinegar. Vinegar is great at killing mold, mildew and bad smells and it won’t damage the rubber components of some washing machines.
Add two cups of vinegar to your washing machine and run a cycle with hot water. You can do this once a month for best results.
In addition to running a cycle with vinegar, it’s a good idea to use a sponge and some vinegar to wipe around all the edges of the machine, including around the lid. These are areas that the normal water cycle may not reach but they are still impacted by the machine’s humidity.
Finally, if your machine has any removable parts like cups for bleach or fabric softeners, take those out and give them a good rinse and wipe before putting them back in the machine.
Regular maintenance of your washing machine will not only help it run better, it will help keep your clothes cleaner too!
