What fabric makes for the comfiest sweater?

When it comes to sweaters, there are a lot of choices out there. From turtle necks to cardigans and pullovers to tunics, choosing the best option can feel overwhelming. So let’s start with the basics–which is the softest?

When it comes down to it, no matter your personal style, everyone wants a sweater that feels good on your skin and that comes down to choosing the right fabric.

Traditionally sweaters have been made from natural, woven fibers. The weave gives the fabric some elasticity and some breathability but the overall fabric is thick which provides great warmth. Over time more synthetic fibers have been added to the mix that have different benefits like moisture wicking abilities. Synthetic fibers are quicker to produce but it can be tricky to find synthetic fibers that are as high-quality as natural fibers

Here are the comfiest fabrics for sweaters:

Cashmere: Cashmere is considered a luxury fabric and for good reason. It feels buttery soft on your skin, is lightweight and does a great job of keeping you warm. Cashmere is actually a type of wool, made from the undercoat of cashmere goats, but it is so unique it has really become a class all of its own.

Wool: Wool may get a bad rap from some as being an itchy fabric, but there are actually many different types of wool and the type makes all the difference. Merino wool is very soft as well as Mohair or Alpaca. Stay away from shetland wool as it can be a bit more rough.

Cotton: Cotton is the ultimate choice for comfort. It’s such a versatile fabric, used for just about any clothing and easy to clean over and over. The trouble with cotton is it may not be as warm as wool or professional looking as cashmere. Still, it’s a great choice when the weather isn’t too cold for keeping you comfortably wrapped up in softness.

Synthetics: Synthetics include fabrics like acrylic, spandex and polyester. Sweaters made from these fabrics may be more lightweight and moisture-wicking which makes them great for athletic wear.

Blended fabrics: In a world of fast fashion you may often find sweaters made with a mix of different fibers. These blends may be created to bring together the best parts of each type of fiber–or possibly to cut costs in production. It’s important as you review what a garment is made of to know what each fabric brings to the piece and decide from there if you think the blend makes sense.
